Press Release Body: Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (June 5, 2008) - If someone told you to measure your carbon footprint, which would you check first: your car, or your shoe closet? June 5th is World Environment Day, and people all over the globe are getting educated about their impact on the earth in honor of this United Nations sponsored holiday.
Started in 1972, this year's slogan is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy, emphasizing the importance of reining in energy consumption and green house gas emissions.
Right now, nothing is hotter than going green, but not everyone knows the cool consequences of participating in a low-carbon lifestyle. Take this quick quiz about greenhouse gas effects and see if your knowledge gets the 'green' light!
1. What are the main types of greenhouse gas? a. Nitrogen Oxide, Carbon Bicarbonate, Carbon Dioxide and Plutonium Gas b. Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Helium c. Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Fluorinated Gases
2. What is 'the greenhouse effect'? a. How mad your neighbor gets when your tomatoes grow bigger than his. b. The role of the atmosphere in protecting the planet from heat loss. c. How quickly the atmosphere loses heat when gasses leak in.
3. Are all greenhouse gas emissions our fault? a. Not all, but the most potent Fluorinated Gases are man-made. b. Yes, with the increase resulting from solar energy overuse. c. No, it is a natural trend and human industry has no effect.

Don't worry if the questions left you stumped. The Environmental Protections Agency's website is full of eye-opening facts for grown-ups looking to expand their environmental education. For the younger generation, television shows and books that promote an appreciation of nature help them grow-up green. Sylvan Dell Publishing offers a range of titles for the budding environmentalist, such as The Rainforest Grew All Around and In My Backyard. The Sylvan Dell website also offers free quizzes and games that inspire kids to explore the natural world, locally and globally.
There is a way to fit concern with the environment into every lifestyle. If you can't bike to work, try to recycle paper and plastic. If you love your Styrofoam cups, think about volunteering at a local nature reserve or bird sanctuary. Even changing the type of light bulbs you use can have a major impact! According to the ENERGY STAR website, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. This is just one example of how a single bright idea can make huge impacts on the planet we call home.
